Thousands of Kenyan university students are set to benefit from a new Sh1 billion financing programme designed to improve access to quality accommodation while equipping graduates with the capital needed to launch businesses.

The initiative, dubbed the Zinduka Graduate Enterprise Programme, brings together Co-operative Bank of Kenya, Acorn Holdings Limited and Absa Bank Kenya in a partnership that seeks to tackle two of the biggest challenges facing university students: limited access to affordable housing and lack of startup financing after graduation.

Under the programme, graduates with viable business ideas will be eligible for enterprise loans ranging between Sh200,000 and Sh500,000. The partners estimate the initiative will support between 5,000 and 10,000 new businesses every year, helping young entrepreneurs create jobs and contribute to economic growth.

Kenya has an estimated 500,000 university students but fewer than 40,000 university-owned accommodation spaces, forcing the majority to rely on informal and often costly housing. The Zinduka programme addresses this gap by providing unsecured accommodation loans through a co-borrowing model involving students and their parents. Monthly repayments begin from Sh4,000, making the financing more accessible to families.

Beyond financing accommodation, the model is designed to help students build a strong credit profile while still in university. Those who consistently repay their housing loans throughout their studies will graduate with an established credit history, improving their eligibility for enterprise financing after completing their degrees. Acorn will provide a first-loss guarantee on the startup loans, reducing lending risks for participating banks.

Students enrolled in the programme will also undergo quarterly entrepreneurship training at Acorn’s Qwetu and Qejani student residences and develop business plans that will form part of their loan applications.

Speaking during the launch, Acorn Holdings Chief Executive Officer Edward Kirathe said the initiative bridges the gap between university life and entrepreneurship by enabling students to secure decent accommodation while preparing them to build successful businesses after graduation.

Co-operative Bank Director for Youth Financial Services Joel Kaba said the bank’s Sh1 billion commitment reflects its focus on empowering young people through practical financial solutions that combine affordable housing with future enterprise opportunities.

Absa Bank Kenya Managing Director and CEO Abdi Mohamed said the lender will complement the financing by offering workplace readiness training through the ReadytoWork programme, exploring internship opportunities and supporting the creation of a seed fund for promising student-led enterprises. More than 5,000 students are expected to benefit from tailored financial solutions under the partnership.

Acorn Holdings currently operates about 13,000 student accommodation beds across 15 properties under its Qwetu and Qejani brands, with an additional 7,000 beds under development as demand for purpose-built student housing continues to grow.
