Construction of the long-awaited Naivasha–Kisumu–Malaba Standard Gauge Railway> extension has officially commenced, marking a significant milestone in Kenya’s efforts to expand its railway network and strengthen regional trade under the Northern Corridor transport system.
The project was launched on March 19, 2026, during a groundbreaking ceremony held at Narok Teachers Training College, officiated by William Ruto. The event was attended by senior government officials, management of Kenya Railways, representatives of China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), and local leaders.
The start of construction was witnessed by Kenya Railways Managing Director Philip Mainga, Narok County Commissioner Kipkech Lotiatia, Narok County Secretary Mayan Tuya, officials from the National Land Commission, the project contractor, community leaders and other stakeholders.
The railway will extend the existing Standard Gauge Railway from Naivasha through Narok, Bomet, Kericho, Nyamira and Kisumu before terminating at Malaba on the Kenya–Uganda border. The line is expected to improve cargo movement between the Port of Mombasa and neighbouring East African countries.
Speaking during the launch, President Ruto said the railway would boost trade within the region and reinforce Kenya’s position as East Africa’s logistics hub.
According to the Ministry of Roads and Transport, the project will be implemented in two phases. Phase 2B will involve the construction of approximately 264 kilometres of railway from Naivasha to Kisumu, including an 8.9-kilometre branch line to Kisumu Port. Phase 2C will extend the railway from Kisumu to Malaba, providing a direct link to Uganda’s rail network and laying the foundation for deeper regional integration.
Once completed, the extension is expected to reduce the cost of transporting goods, improve the efficiency of freight movement, stimulate economic activity along the corridor and enhance connectivity between Kenya and the wider East African region.
