Co-operative Bank of Kenya has been recognised for its contribution to the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) sector, receiving the Leadership in Water Infrastructure and Finance Enterprise Award for its financing initiatives through the Co-op A Maji product.
The award recognises the bank’s role in supporting access to financing for water and sanitation infrastructure, a critical area for improving public health, strengthening communities and expanding access to essential services.
The trophy was presented by Water.org President and Chief Operating Officer Vedika Bhandarkar. The bank’s Head of Investor Relations, Ben Muriuki, received the award on behalf of Co-operative Bank, accompanied by other members of staff.
Through its Co-op A Maji product, the bank supports financing for water-related investments, helping address funding needs in a sector that plays a vital role in community development and economic growth.
Access to reliable water and sanitation services remains essential for households, businesses, schools and health facilities. However, financing gaps continue to challenge efforts to expand and improve infrastructure, particularly in underserved communities.
The recognition highlights the role financial institutions can play in bridging these gaps by developing financing solutions that support investment in water and sanitation services.
Co-operative Bank’s recognition underscores the importance of partnerships between financial institutions and development organisations in mobilising resources to strengthen the WASH sector and improve access to essential services.
