Kenya Railways has temporarily suspended commuter train services on several routes, citing safety concerns.

The affected routes include Nairobi-Ruiru, Nairobi-Embakasi Village, Nairobi-Lukenya, and Nairobi-Syokimau.

In a public notice issued on Tuesday, the corporation stated, “We are compelled to take these precautionary measures because the safety of our customers is of paramount importance to us.”

The suspension takes immediate effect. No timeline has been given for the resumption of services.

“We will advise you once normal services resume,” the notice read.

Kenya Railways apologised for the disruption, saying, “We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

The notice was signed by the Managing Director and dated June 25, 2025.

On June 18, 2025, Kenya Railways announced the imminent launch of the Mombasa Commuter Rail service, a move set to revolutionise how travellers access the coastal city.

“Imagine, no more long, costly transfers from Mombasa Terminus and easier movement for families, tourists, traders and students,” Kenya Railways said in a statement on Wednesday.

For years, passengers disembarking from the Nairobi-Mombasa SGR train at the Miritini Terminus, located some 11 kilometres from the city centre, have had to rely on matatus, taxis or boda bodas for the final leg of their journey.
