Senate Majority Whip Boni Khalwale has moved a motion to form a 11-member committee to probe Shakahola cult deaths.

The Kakamega senator wants the team to establish root cause of the deaths, now standing at 95, that has thrown entire country in shock.

“In the exercise of its oversight function, the senate resolves to establish an ad hoc committee to investigate the circumstances leading to the death of the followers of Good News International Church led by one Paul MacKenzie Nthenge in Shakahola village, Kilifi County, ” he said in the motion.

The motion also seeks to have the committee investigate the role played by Makenzie, his pastoral team and the Kilifi County security committee in aiding and abetting the deaths of the church’s followers.

“The committee should establish through the office of the registrar of societies, the number and activities of religious groups in the country including their registration and compliance status,” he said.

The committee will also audit the legal and registration framework for religious organisations in the country.

The panel will develop a legislative proposal on regulation of religious activities in the country.

It will also make any other recommendation that will prevent religious organisations from extreme indoctrination of their followers including radicalisation, spiritual and financial exploitation.
