Seventy-three teachers have died of Covid-19 since the first case was reported, while another 454 have recovered, TSC has said.

Chief executive Nancy Macharia on Monday said 158,678 teachers have received at least the first vaccination jab.

However, Macharia has raised concerns over 44 per cent of teachers who had yet to be inoculated with at least one dose.

“I urge the 44.4 per cent of teachers who did not receive any vaccination at all to move quickly and get the jab to protect their lives,” Macharia said.

She spoke at the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development during the launch of a survey on teacher preparedness for school reopening in 2021.

“I urge the teachers who got the first dose to take advantage of the ongoing second dose vaccination exercise in a bid to gain full immunisation,” Macharia said.

She noted that as schools reopen, teachers will be required to wear masks and wash hands regularly with soap and water or use sanitizer.

Macharia also directed school heads to stick to stipulated school fees and avoid loading parents with unnecessary levies.

“The TSC is investigating a few allegations that some teachers are not complying with Government directives on fees. Action will be taken on those found culpable,” she said.

To address teacher shortage, she noted that 8,914 teachers have been recruited.
