resident Uhuru Kenyatta on Monday commissioned the construction of three Level 3 hospitals in Nairobi’s informal settlements.
Uhuru witnessed the ground breaking for the construction of 16-bed capacity hospitals at Muthua in Uthiru and Kianda in Kibra as well as a 24-bed facility at Maendeleo Village in Mukuru kwa Reuben.
The three hospitals are part of 20 facilities of a similar type earmarked for various parts of the city and are being developed by the Nairobi Metropolitan Service (NMS) at an average cost of Sh70 million each.
Speaking to the residents who attended the event, the President said the projects are part of a grand plan to transform the outlook of the city, especially its informal settlements.
He also asked Kenyans to ignore disruptive and empty political rhetoric, saying that the government’s focus is to improve the living standards of Nairobi residents.
Uhuru also urged Kenyans to continue protecting themselves from the coronavirus by following the established health protocols.
NMS Director General Major Gen. Mohamed Badi and Nairobi Regional Coordinator Kang’ethe Thuku accompamied the president.
NMS is also fast tracking the sinking of community boreholes to provide free clean drinking water and upgrading of access roads to bitumen standard.
In July, the NMS boss said Nairobians will be able to access health facilities in their neighbourhood in 100 days.
Badi pledged to build 19 dispensaries and rehabilitate five others in the slums, all at a cost of Sh2 billion.
“In my next 100 days, I intend to build 24 fully functional hospitals in Nairobi’s informal settlements. The development comes at a cost and we must ensure we do not go back to where we came from,” Badi said.
