The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has announced that the ongoing Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration (ECVR) exercise will not be extended beyond the April 28 deadline.
IEBC Commissioner Hassan Noor Hassan made the declaration during a high-level meeting with security officials in Isiolo County, as the country enters the final phase of the nationwide registration campaign.
With only days remaining, Hassan urged eligible Kenyans to register, noting that turnout so far has been lower than expected.
“We have only six days left. I urge all eligible Kenyans to come forward and register now because time is running out and the current turnout remains significantly low,” he said.
He emphasised that the timeline is final, stressing the need for urgency among citizens.
The meeting convened key stakeholders to discuss ways to enhance voter and civic education in the region, which continues to face unique challenges affecting registration.
“We must intensify our efforts in these final days. There will be no extension, and every eligible voter must take personal responsibility to ensure they are registered,” Hassan added.
The ECVR exercise, which began on March 30, 2026, is a 30-day nationwide initiative aimed at registering new voters and allowing existing voters to update or transfer their details ahead of future elections.
Local administrators reaffirmed their commitment to supporting the process despite ongoing obstacles.
Isiolo County Commissioner David Kiprop highlighted several challenges affecting registration, including adverse weather, poor network coverage, the vast size of the county, voter apathy, and insecurity.
“However, we will continue supporting IEBC to overcome these challenges throughout the electoral cycle,” he said.
Other security officials, including County Administration Police Commander James Gitau and Deputy County Prisons Commissioner Halake Tato, also pledged to maintain a secure and conducive environment for voter registration and future electoral activities.
Meanwhile, Isiolo County Secretary Dade Boru pointed to grassroots mobilisation efforts such as radio talk shows and public barazas aimed at boosting awareness and participation.
“We are leveraging community structures and local media to ensure information reaches every corner of the county. The goal is to encourage as many people as possible to register before the deadline,” Boru said.
Addressing IEBC staff, Commissioner Hassan called on them to maximise the remaining time and intensify efforts to meet registration targets.
“Let us use these final days effectively. Every registration counts, and your commitment on the ground will make the difference,” he urged.
