Nyeri: 17 pupils die in school dorm fire

A dormitory that is subject to a fire tragedy at Hillside Endarasha Academy in Kieni, Nyeri County housed Grades 4 to 8 boys, government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura has said.

The fire tragedy caused 17 deaths with 14 other pupils injured.

In a statement, Mwaura said the fire broke out around midnight.

Mwaura said 156 boys were residing in the dormitory.

“Emergency services are still determining the final number of fatalities, with updates to follow as more information becomes available,” he said.

At least 17 pupils were confirmed dead at the school following the fire incident.

National Police Service Spokesperson Resila Onyango confirmed the incident with the Star.

“We have 17 pupils dead and 14 injured. We are investigating the cause and take necessary action,” she said.

The pupils are said to have been burnt beyond recognition

All response teams are on the scene.

Parents and guardians of the pupils were also alerted of the tragedy.
