A former police officer was on Friday sentenced to 15 years imprisonment for the murder of 24-year-old Ahmed Majid in 2020.
Daniel Mwongela was found guilty of the offence on January 15, 2024.
While sentencing him, Milimani High Court Judge Daniel Ogembo said the aggravating factors in the matter including the loss of a young life outweigh the mitigation raised by the accused.
“He deserves a deterrent custodial sentence that will ensure justice to the family of the deceased and to the accused an opportunity to reform,” the judge said.
Justice Ogembo noted that the convict has right of appeal for either the conviction or sentencing, or both.
In his mitigation ahead of the sentencing, Mwongela prayed for a non-custodial sentence saying he was his family’s breadwinner.
The state, however, opposed the request pointing out that the deceased also had a family and a young ones who are now destitute.
