Small and medium-sized business owners are being encouraged to strengthen their financial and business management skills as they seek to build resilient enterprises and create more jobs.

The call emerged from an engagement by Co-operative Bank of Kenya that brought together business owners for discussions on practical ways of improving enterprise performance.

The initiative included workshops aimed at equipping entrepreneurs with business and financial skills, highlighting the growing importance of financial literacy in helping small businesses survive, expand and remain competitive.

For many entrepreneurs, having a good business idea is only the beginning. Understanding cash flow, managing finances, planning for growth and making informed investment decisions are equally important in determining whether an enterprise succeeds.

The engagement provided a platform for business owners to share experiences, learn from experts and explore approaches that can help them overcome some of the challenges facing small enterprises.

Small and medium-sized enterprises remain an important part of Kenya’s economy, providing employment and income to millions of households. However, many businesses continue to face challenges including limited access to capital, inadequate financial management skills and changing market conditions.

Strengthening entrepreneurs’ capacity to manage their businesses can therefore help them make better decisions and position their enterprises for sustainable growth.

The forum also reflects the increasing role of financial institutions in supporting entrepreneurs beyond providing loans and other financial products. Business training and mentorship can help customers understand how to use financial services effectively while building stronger enterprises.

For emerging entrepreneurs, such support can be particularly important as they transition from informal operations into more structured businesses.

The Co-op Bank engagement brought together business owners in a forum designed to provide practical knowledge and encourage peer learning.

The focus on skills also comes as Kenyan entrepreneurs navigate an increasingly competitive business environment, where digitalisation, changing consumer behaviour and rising operating costs require businesses to adapt quickly.

Entrepreneurs who can effectively manage their finances, understand their markets and plan for the future are better placed to withstand economic shocks and take advantage of emerging opportunities.

The initiative underscores the importance of combining access to finance with knowledge—giving entrepreneurs not only the resources to invest in their businesses, but also the skills to manage those resources effectively.

As Kenya continues to promote entrepreneurship as a pathway to employment and economic empowerment, strengthening the capacity of small business owners could prove critical to ensuring that enterprises survive, grow and create opportunities for others.
