A 32-year-old man has died after allegedly consuming excessive alcohol during a celebration in Olubumbu village, Kuresoi, Nakuru County.

A second man who was part of the same drinking group was rescued and rushed to hospital, where he remains in critical condition, according to police.

The two were among several villagers who had gathered on Friday to celebrate the initiation of a group of boys. Police said the revelers are believed to have taken large quantities of alcohol during the festivities.

Villagers later found the two men lying unconscious by the roadside and alerted authorities. They were taken to a nearby health facility, but Sammy Karenjo was pronounced dead on arrival. His body has been taken to the mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.

Police have launched investigations into the incident at a time when a nationwide crackdown on illicit alcohol is underway. The operation has resulted in the seizure and destruction of large quantities of illegal brews and the arrest of numerous suspected producers.

Meanwhile, in an unrelated incident in Mteremko area of Bungoma Town, a 35-year-old man was stabbed to death during a confrontation. The victim, Alex Ongeri, is said to have broken into a private home, where a fight broke out after the owner confronted him.

Police are investigating both cases.
