The 16-year-old was expected to sit for his final exams on Wednesday to complete primary school.

“Yesterday (Tuesday) he tried the exams,” the police report seen by the Star reads in part.

“He was later admitted to the hospital where he succumbed.”

KCPE exams began on Monday.

At least 1.4 million candidates were registered by the Kenya National Examinations Council in 2023 to undertake the last KCPE exams under the 8-4-4 curriculum which has been in place since 1985.

The system, which has been criticised for mounting pressure on learners for higher grades, is being replaced with the Competency-Based Curriculum.
